For downtown St. Paul, a revamped Penfield
by Burl Gilyard Staff Writer
On Monday, officials unveiled a reconfigured version of The Penfield development that now calls for 208 upscale apartments, a 170-room Hyatt Place Select Service and a 30,000-square-foot Lunds grocery store on the main level.
The Penfield was first pitched as a 313-unit condo tower in 2005; earlier this year, developers finally scrapped the condo plan. The fate of the high-profile Penfield project has been the subject of rampant speculation in downtown St. Paul for quite a while.
But none of the project elements were confirmed until a coordinated announcement Monday afternoon from the city of St. Paul, Edina-based Lund Food Holdings Inc., and Penfield Development, LLC.
Construction is slated to begin on the revised $88 million Penfield project in the fall of 2009, with an opening set for 2011.
