Sherman Associates’ commitment to the preservation of historic spaces will be highlighted today in an awards ceremony which will both honor and take place in the Greysolon Plaza’s beautiful ballroom.  The Duluth Preservation Alliance selected the property, currently leased and managed by New London Corporation, along with a number of other important Duluth landmarks which will be recognized as making significant efforts in historic preservation and building restoration.  This honor comes at a wonderfully opportune time for Sherman Associates as the efforts to compile a final financing package for the significant restoration of the NorShor Theater, located one block away, are underway.

Accolades for the Greysolon space abound including those from Bob Berg, the alliance’s vice president who commented that “It’s magnificent.  It’s the most beautiful interior in the city as far as I’m concerned, both the original construction and the restoration they did.”

Sherman Associates was awarded 9% tax credits from the Iowa Finance Authority on May 2^nd for a multifamily housing project in Davenport, IA.  The 3-story new construction project, Harrison Lofts, will consist of 60 units ranging in size from Studios to 3-BR.  Commercial space will be located on a portion of the main floor.  Construction is anticipated to commence this fall with units available for occupancy by mid-2013.

Minneapolis-based developer George Sherman has expanded his Duluth holdings with the purchase of the Chateau luxury apartments on London Road.  The $12 million purchase from the Bowman family was finalized on March 16.

Sherman, whose company built the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Duluth, called the Chateau apartments first rate and a good investment.  “They’re fantastic properties, one of a kind,” Sherman said. “The Bowmans have taken very good care of the property. Residents are very happy. It’s a great location, a great property and great residents.”…

Sherman Associates acted as fee developer for the Minnesota Public Housing Authority in building a model new housing community in Minneapolis.  The Star Tribune wrote:

“Last month, Thomas T. Feeney Manor opened in north Minneapolis with 24 units for memory care residents and 24 units of enhanced assisted living apartments. This month, a senior services health and wellness center will open next door, which will include a senior-oriented YMCA, health clinic, senior day program and programs run by the Courage Center.”

Grizzly’s Wood-Fired Grill is expanding in the Twin Ports by adding a third restaurant in the former Hell’s Kitchen location in Canal Park.

…Starting up another restaurant was a no-brainer for Rick Lampton, Grizzly’s local managing partner who runs the Twin Ports Grizzly’s…After a month of negotiations, a 10-year lease was signed Friday with property owner Sherman Associates, Lampton said.

The city of Duluth and developer George Sherman have an agreement in place that could see up to $19 million spent to renovate the historic NorShor Theater and have it ready for use by 2014.

“The scope and quality of the project proposed is well beyond my expectations,” said Mayor Don Ness. “It’s going to be outstanding. It’ll be a real point of pride for our community.”
