The Minneapolis school district is planning to build a new education and career center.
The center will give students a chance to earn a high school diploma or a GED. It will also offer college credit opportunities, career certification, internships and apprenticeships.
The 48,000-square-foot facility will be a collaboration between the district, the Department of Employment and Economic Development, Minneapolis Community and Technical College and North Point Health and Wellness Center.
It’s meant to help students who may have dropped out as well as newly arrived immigrants who might struggle in a traditional classroom setting.
Michael Goar, the district’s interim superintendent, said the center will offer a community health clinic.
The $6.4 million facility will be built in north Minneapolis and is expected to open next spring.
Officials with Minneapolis Public Schools said the cost of the center will be covered by leasing office and retail space in the new building.
